How do established Linux environments become standardised platform services?

For a company that develops and operates highly available IT and system architectures, we are looking for a Platform Engineer (m/f/d) specialising in Linux and infrastructure automation. The team is evolving from a traditional infrastructure organisation into a product- and platform-oriented engineering team. The aim is to standardise individual system environments, automate them and provide them as reusable services.

In this role, you combine architectural understanding with practical implementation. You develop foundational technical architectures, justify your decisions and support solutions through to live operation. We are looking for neither a traditional administrator nor a pure high-level architect, but a technically hands-on Platform Architect / Engineer with an understanding of DevOps and automation. Hands-on work is expressly part of the role. The position is permanent and full-time. The hybrid working model involves around 50 per cent on-site work, depending on project and operational requirements.

Your responsibilities

  • You design and develop Linux-based system, infrastructure and platform architectures.
  • You develop standardised platform and infrastructure services and transform established individual solutions into automated structures.
  • You build and develop Infrastructure as Code structures, as well as CI/CD processes and pipelines.
  • You automate infrastructure, deployment and recurring operational processes, including with Ansible playbooks.
  • You assess technical solution alternatives and make well-founded architectural decisions.
  • You consider high availability, security, scalability and operational viability from the outset of the architectural design.
  • You test concepts in practice through proofs of concept and technical implementation.
  • You plan technical initiatives, coordinate with interdisciplinary teams and support solutions through to operation.
  • You design or carry out testing, load and operational scenarios, and facilitate technical discussions and architecture reviews.

What you bring

What you should have:

  • Several years of practical experience in Linux infrastructure, Platform Engineering, DevOps, DevSecOps or comparable technical roles.
  • Strong practical experience with infrastructure automation and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Practical experience with Ansible or a comparable configuration or automation framework.
  • Experience with containerisation and modern infrastructure setups.
  • Practical experience with CI/CD and automated deployment processes.
  • Experience with complex or distributed system environments.
  • Experience designing technical architectures or platform solutions.
  • Ability to analyse requirements and derive a foundational technical architecture from them.
  • Understanding of high availability, scalability, security and operational requirements.
  • Ability to validate concepts in practice or implement them as prototypes.
  • Very strong ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly and justify architectural decisions on technical grounds.
  • Structured approach, prioritisation skills and personal responsibility across concurrent topics.
  • Business-fluent German and good English.

Experience with the following is a plus:

  • Kubernetes and Docker or container platforms.
  • Python or Bash.
  • Monitoring and observability, for example with Grafana.
  • OpenTelemetry or logging and monitoring pipelines.
  • Private cloud environments.
  • Security and hardening.
  • Testing and load scenarios.
  • Scrum, Kanban or comparable agile ways of working.
  • Product-oriented engineering organisations.

What makes this role interesting

The company is aligning its infrastructure more closely with standardised platforms, automation and reusable services. You can help shape the technical platform strategy and have a lasting influence on standards and platform services.

The scope of responsibility is intended to develop over time from individual technical solutions towards broader product and platform ownership. The role explicitly combines conceptual architectural work with practical technical implementation.

How you work

You work with different technical disciplines, share knowledge and lead technical discussions constructively. Even when handling several topics in parallel, you structure uncertainty, set priorities and explain why you recommend a particular approach.

Terms and conditions

  • Permanent, full-time employment
  • Location: Bad Homburg
  • Hybrid working model with around 50 per cent on-site work, depending on project and operational requirements
  • A successful security screening is a prerequisite for the role
